The body of a man who went swimming near Chowder Bay on the Labour Day public holiday has been recovered by NSW police.

Emergency services were called to Obelisk Beach just after 5pm yesterday (4/10), following reports a swimmer had not resurfaced.

Witnesses told police a group of people were swimming out to a boat anchored off the beach, when a man disappeared underwater and had not been seen since.

At 8:20pm, his body was recovered by police divers.

“Officers from the Marine Area Command attended and conducted a search with the assistance of PolAir, Marine Rescue and NSW Maritime,” a spokesperson says.

The man is yet to be formally identified.

A report will be prepared for the Coroner.
