Exclusive: Jamie Oliver and Nigella Lawson dine at Bathers Pavilion on Balmoral Beach, so what did they order?
In the past few years, Mosman has played host to rock stars and royalty, with Justin Biefer, David Beckham and the Duke and Duchess of Sussex all paying the suburb a visit. Now, we can add international celebrity chefs to the mix, with Nigella Lawson and Jamie Oliver both dining locally.
Local diners were left star-struck when celebrity chef Jamie Oliver strolled into Bathers Pavilion at lunch time on Sunday, in search of “the best food in Mosman”.
Accompanied by Aussie chef Ben O’Donoghue, the pair enjoyed a relaxed meal, with Jamie casually dressed in a short-sleeved navy shirt, blue jeans and trainers.
He is the second international cook to visit Bathers in a week, with “domestic goddess” Nigella Lawson paying a surprise visit to the Balmoral restaurant last Thursday.
Bathers Pavilion Head chef and owner Serge Dansereau said hosting both Jamie and Nigella in the space of a few days had been a “real buzz” for staff and patrons.
“They were both gracious and incredibly generous with their time,” he told Mosman Collective.
“It’s always wonderful having the big names visit Bathers Pavilion and the suburb has become a real “destination” spot for thousands of international visitors each year.
“The flow on effect for local business and the lower north shore is fantastic.”
Wearing a Dolce & Gabbana long sleeve “Snap Pea” midi dress in red, Nigella devoured freshly shucked oysters with mignonette dressing, followed by poached Murray cod with squid linguini, squid ink crumble, cauliflower and dashi.
“Nigella loves Australian produce and she told us how much she enjoyed her Bathers lunch,” staffer Rob Davis said.
“It’s been a massive few days for the restaurant, and after hosting Nigella, we then received an email from Jamie Oliver’s P.A.
“He hadn’t been to Mosman before and really wanted to visit Bathers.”
The British super-chef arrived at Midday, ordering a bottle of Barossa Valley 2018 Spinifex Rose, before pouring over the menu with his dining companion.
Jamie settled on an entrée of Yellowfin tuna tartare with ponzu and avocado, rice paper and sesame, followed by a complimentary dish sent out by Serge Dansereau.
“It was a pumpkin and goats cheese cannelloni with hazelnut, confit cherry tomato, dill and caper water,” Serge said, “and he absolutely loved it.”
Jamie then chose a main meal of Moreton Bay bug tail, served with sweet corn polenta, finger limes, squid ink and seaweed butter.
The pair wrapped up lunch at around 2pm, with Jamie revealing he was next headed to The Spit for a spot of fishing.
“So, I gave the boys a 6-pack of beer to enjoy out there on our beautiful harbour,” Serge said, “and fingers crossed they reeled a few fish in!”
