MKR Winners Will & Steve Have The Recipe For Success

Every time he sets foot on the golden sands of Balmoral Beach, Mosman local Will Stewart pinches himself. As one half of the dynamic culinary duo Will and Steve, the British born 38-year-old and his Sydney raised wife, Maggie have, for the last three-and-a-half years, called our suburb home.

"We absolutely love living here," he says.

"Maggie and I were lucky enough to be married down at Bathers Pavilion and for a Pommie like me, the setting absolutely blew my mind. 

"I guess that’s when our true love affair with Mosman began," Will fondly recalls.

 
 

Life for the former banker and his best mate has changed immeasurably since clinching the coveted MKR title two years ago, with both Will and Steve now recognised wherever they go.

"People stop us for selfies and they love having a chin wag when we’re out and about, but it’s just so good knowing that Aussies continue to welcome us with open arms," Steve tells Mosman Collective.

"I suppose it’s because we are fairly ordinary blokes and people can relate to us. 

"We’re passionate about food and we’re super proud of what we’ve achieved.

"But for us, the Will and Steve brand is only just beginning.

Their recently released cookbook, Home Cook, Aspiring Chef contains more than 100 recipes and has already impressed industry experts, like world renowned Chef Colin Fassnidge, who says Will and Steve are a testament to hard work and passion.

"Their food is clever, modern and textured," he says.

"They exhibit respect for ingredients and flavours."

The book takes apart popular retro dishes like Coronation Chicken and Apple Crumble, reimagining them with exciting results: unexpected textures and beautifully balanced flavour-ways form dishes that are both original and delicious.

"We use the best ingredients we can afford, we are passionate about supporting local producers – and when you combine this with adding as much flavour as possible, we find that our food (and the attitude towards it) really brings people together," Steve says.

When asked to nominate his favourite recipe in Home Cook, Aspiring Chef, Steve says it’s the Scotch Egg. 

"After all, it’s where it all began," he says.

The humble Scotch Egg was the first dish we cooked on national television and over a million people tuned in to see us do it. 

"It’s actually pretty special to me – and I absolutely love eating them."

For Will though, it’s his reinvented Shepherd’s Pie.

"I can't tell you how much I love cooking - and eating Shepherd's Pie," he laughs.

"It’s my go-to dish if I need something filling, deliciously tasty and relatively quick for when people come over at the last minute."

With plans underway for a new TV show, regular publicity appearances and live cooking demonstrations, it’s clear that Will and Steve’s star is still on the rise.

"But please don’t call us chefs," Steve says.

"That would be embarrassing. We haven’t earned that label and we certainly don’t deserve that title. Will and I are just a pair of passionate home cooks who love connecting people with food."
