OUTDOOR DINING PLAYS A HUGE ROLE IN OUR LIFESTYLE – AND WHEN IT COMES TO LOCAL PICNIC SPOTS, WE’RE ABSOLUTELY SPOILED FOR CHOICE. FROM OPEN GRASSY SPACES TO PICTURESQUE BEACH LOCATIONS, MOSMAN HAS PLENTY TO OFFER. ANNA USHER GIVES US HER LIST OF FAVOURITE HARBOUR SIDE HOT SPOTS, FOR YOUR NEXT SUMMER GATHERING!

1. BRADLEYS HEAD

Thanks to its first-class location, Bradleys Head is without a doubt one of Sydney’s most stunning outdoor venues, boasting breath taking views of the Sydney Opera House, the Sydney Harbour Bridge and Fort Denison.

Its amphitheatre is also one of Australia’s most popular wedding locations, built specifically in 2000 for shooting parts of Mission Impossible 2.

Bradleys Head is also historically significant, with the mast of HMAS Sydney towering over the area, as a striking monument to all Australian ships and sailors lost in conflict.

2. headland park

This is one of our favourite open-air spaces in Mosman, much loved by local families and especially kids! Georges Heights has some of the most stunning views you’ll find anywhere in the world, with uninterrupted panoramas across to Manly, Vaucluse, and to the city of Sydney.

Headland Park was once used by the military as a lookout spot for approaching enemy ships and it’s also home to a maze of concealed gun pits, underground tunnels and other fascinating military relics.

An added bonus here are the FREE electric BBQ’s (so don’t forget the snags!) and grass tennis courts ($20/hour and booking essential by contacting the Harbour Trust on (02) 8969 2100).

3. SIRIUS COVE

If picnicking with your pooch appeals, then look no further than Sirius Cove!

This dog friendly, off leash little beach is popular all year round, especially on weekends.

A recently refurbished playground keeps the kids occupied and there are plenty of picnic tables offering fantastic harbour views. Sirius Cove is small and sheltered with good toilet facilities and plenty of shady areas.

It is also the site of Curlew Camp, where famous Australian artists like Tom Roberts, Arthur Streeton and Sidney Long lived (and painted) in the late 19th century.

4. ROSHERVILLE RESERVE

Tucked away behind the hidden treasure that is Chinamans Beach, Rosherville Reserve is one of those places that’s often overlooked by locals and visitors.

Unlike its bigger and busier neighbour Balmoral, it is the perfect place for a family gathering or kid’s birthday party, offering good parking, plenty of shade and decent toilet facilities.

A reminder that there are no kiosk or café’s here, so it’s strictly BYO everything!

Rosherville Reserve is one of our biggest local parks, with almost three hectares of wide, open space (lots of room for a game of family touch footy or cricket!)

5. CHOWDER BAY

This stunning beach is undoubtedly one of the jewels in Mosman’s crown.

With its crystal clear, brilliantly blue water, Chowder Bay is a favourite destination for both locals and day trippers.

It has a vast reserve, with lots of shady trees, picnic tables, a huge playground and room for bikes and scooters – which means the kids will be occupied for hours!

And then there’s the enclosed swimming area – and a lengthy jetty (great for dropping a fishing line) … you really couldn’t ask for anything more, could you?
