Melbourne Cup 2017: Your Race Day Fashion Guide

ON MELBOURNE CUP DAY, ITS EASY TO PRETEND THAT WE'RE TOTALLY FOCUSSED ON THE TRACK. BUT LET'S FACE IT LADIES - THE RACE THAT STOPS THE NATION IS ALL ABOUT THE FASHION! WHETHER YOU'RE PARTYING AT FLEMINGTON, OR CELEBRATING LOCALLY - OUR SUPER STYLIST SAMANTHA McNAMARA IS HERE TO HELP, WHEN IT COMES TO WINNING THE STYLE STAKES!

There's only one question on the lips of every Mosman fashionista this week - and it's this:

"Where can I find the dress that stops a nation?!"

If you're heading to Melbourne for the big day, chances are you've been well prepared for months. But if you're partying locally - and still haven't organised a killer outfit, don't fret. There's still time!

The Spring Racing Carnival is the ideal event to explore everything fresh, when it comes to fashion.

Unlike Derby Day, where black and white rules, Melbourne Cup style is all about a riot of colour!

While soft pastels like pink and lilac are making a splash in 2017, girls who prefer a bolder hue won’t be disappointed either. Emerald greens, ruby reds and monochrome looks are all big news for cup lunches.

This year’s trackside style is also about making maximum impact in the most ladylike of ways - with romantic flourishes like maxi florals, ruffle overloads and floor-sweeping boho elegance.

Look to Australian designers who understand exactly how to wow the field. You’ll find the latest and greatest selections on the racks at some of our most popular local stores, like burke. boutiqueFlannel and Carla Zampatti.

For the most click worthy looks, check out Camilla & Marc’s floaty floral Opasidy Mini in Raspberry, Rebecca Vallance’s Gabriella Spot Lace Mini, or combine sweet florals, flouncy ruffles and boho style with Zimmerman’s Folly Feathery Dress.

Other Australian designers to watch when it comes to Fashions on the Field are Yeojin Bae (directional cuts in floaty fabrics and lace), Alice McCall (rouched blooms and pretty layers) or Nicola Finetti (textured drama and grace).

Of course, no Melbourne Cup is complete without gorgeous headwear - and this year, you can expect to see loads of boater hats, jewelled headbands and glam turbans (below) from the one and only Nerida Winter - famous for her fusion of haute couture and race wear.

Carolyn Unwin's stunning creations are available here - or in store at Mosman's Savoir Faire.

Locally, we are completely blessed to have one of Australia's most sought-after milliners living right here in Mosman – Ann Shoebridge - who's indomitable style is both elegant and streamlined.

Her recent collections (see below) have been both a painstaking and mammoth task, with no two hats the same.

Ann says there is a hat for everyone - and a general rule of thumb when selecting a head piece is to choose a brim no wider than your shoulders.

Also in 2088, is the uber stylish and super talented Carolyn Unwin, who stocks her beautiful creations at Savoir Faire on Military Rd.

My final tips for the perfect Melbourne Cup 2017 ensemble are:

  • If you’re wearing a statement dress, remember to keep accessories to a minimum and your fascinator simple so your look sings sophistication.

  • Statement earrings with an off-the-shoulder dress are making a big comeback.

  • Natural makeup with bronze eyes and peachy lips are de rigueur this year.

  • Don’t forget a pair of chic sunnies and a stylish clutch (or shoulder bag) that will work with your look (and hold your bits and bobs!)

  • And finally - ENJOY THE DAY!
